Gaining weight and losing physical mobility does not need to go hand and hand with age.

Many of us are conditioned in to believing that we are automatically going to start degenerating towards old age when we hit our 50’s. Nothing could be further from the truth. There are numerous studies now well documenting the fact that gaining weight and losing physical mobility does not need to go hand and hand with age. We now know enough about human physiology to understand the effect exercise and nutrition can have on our physical and mental health to appreciate how we can not only prevent the effects of aging but actually help reverse the process.

Unfortunately many people over the age of 50 have had poor experiences of exercise and diets and their associations with these things is a lot of pain and very little pleasure. Many also consider exercise or eating properly not to have any real significance in their lives. They don’t believe these factors will make any difference to the way they look and feel.

The fact is that muscle wastage which naturally occurs as we get older is the primary biomarker of aging. This also coincides with changes in our endocrine systems that result in deficiencies in the release of hormones which effect our metabolisms. Reductions in Growth Hormone and Testosterone can lead to lack of energy, memory loss, muscle wastage and deterioration of body shape, strength and cardiovascular disease.

How do we not only stop but help reverse many of the physical effects of ageing?

You can do it by increasing the density of your lean tissue and this can be effectively achieved with progressive resistance training. Every pound of lean tissue you can replace on your frame will increase your metabolism by 60 calories per day. This change in body composition will also help you release more of the positive hormones associated with youth.

To achieve these positive side effects you only need to use resistance training 2 to 3 times per week. The regular intense workouts will help you to naturally stay leaner stronger and fitter.
